External drive not showing up on your Mac: eight checks, fastest first

The drive is plugged in but not in Finder. Whether it is hidden, unmounted, blocked or not detected at all, and how to tell which in under a minute.

You plug the drive in and nothing appears. The drive could be hidden, connected but not mounted, blocked by a security prompt, or not seen by the Mac at all. Each has a different fix, and a quick check tells you which you have.

1. Is it just hidden in Finder?

Open Finder, Settings. Under General, tick External disks to show them on the Desktop. Under Sidebar, tick External disks too. A surprising number of missing drives were there all along.

2. Does the Mac see it at all?

3. Mount it

Open Disk Utility, choose View, Show All Devices, select the greyed-out volume and click Mount. Or in Terminal:

diskutil mount /dev/disk4s2 # use the identifier from diskutil list

4. Allow the accessory

On Mac laptops with Apple silicon, macOS can ask before a new accessory connects. If you dismissed that prompt, the drive is blocked. Check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Allow accessories to connect, then unplug and reconnect.

5. Unreadable or unknown format

If macOS says the disk is not readable, it may be formatted for Linux, encrypted with BitLocker, or damaged. Do not click Initialize if you need the data. See disk not readable.

6. Cable, port and hub

  • Try another cable. Charging-only USB-C cables carry no data.
  • Plug straight into the Mac, not through a hub.
  • Try another port, and another Mac if you have one.

7. Power

Large desktop hard drives need their own power supply. Some portable drives draw more than a hub or a single port can give. A drive that clicks or spins up and down is often underpowered.

8. Is it detected by the hardware?

Open System Information and look under USB or Thunderbolt/USB4. If the drive is listed there but not in diskutil, the enclosure works but the disk inside may have failed. If it is not listed at all, the cable, port or enclosure is the likely problem.

Common questions

Why is my external drive not showing up on my Mac?

It may be hidden in Finder settings, connected but not mounted, blocked by an accessory prompt, formatted for another system, or not detected because of a cable, port or power problem.

How do I make an external drive show on the Mac desktop?

Open Finder, Settings, General and tick External disks. Tick it under Sidebar as well.

How do I mount an external drive that is not mounting?

Open Disk Utility, choose View, Show All Devices, select the volume and click Mount. Or run diskutil mount with its identifier in Terminal.
