Godot is tiny, but export templates and imported assets are not

The Godot editor is small, while export templates for each version and every project's .godot import cache add up. Where they are and what to clear.

3 min read

Godot's editor is a small download. The space goes elsewhere: export templates, around a gigabyte or more per engine version, and each project's cache of imported assets.

du -sh ~/Library/Application\ Support/Godot/export_templates/* 2>/dev/null
find ~ -maxdepth 4 -type d -name .godot -prune -exec du -sh {} + 2>/dev/null | sort -h

Export templates

Templates are installed per Godot version. After upgrading, the old version's templates stay. Remove old ones from Editor, Manage Export Templates, or delete their folders.

The .godot folder

Each project's .godot folder holds imported versions of your assets and editor state. It is rebuilt when the project opens, so deleting it in projects you are not working on is safe. It should not be in version control either.

Heavier engines: Unreal Engine and Unity projects.
