MATLAB installs every release as a separate app, each with its own toolboxes

Each MATLAB release is a full install of several GB, and toolboxes and support packages add more. How to find old releases and what is safe to remove.

MATLAB installs each release, such as R2024b or R2025a, as a separate app in Applications. Installing a new release does not remove the old one. With toolboxes, each can be anywhere from a few GB to over 20 GB.

du -sh /Applications/MATLAB_R*.app 2>/dev/null
du -sh ~/Documents/MATLAB ~/Library/Application\ Support/MathWorks 2>/dev/null

What each part is

LocationHolds
/Applications/MATLAB_R20xx.appOne release with its installed toolboxes
~/Documents/MATLABYour scripts, and often support packages
~/Library/Application Support/MathWorksSettings, add-ons and the service host

Removing old releases

Check that your code runs on the newest release, then remove older ones. MathWorks provides an uninstaller inside each release; dragging the app to the Trash also works for most setups. Your preferences for each release are in ~/Library/Application Support/MathWorks/MATLAB, one folder per release, and old ones can go too.

Installing less next time

The installer lets you choose toolboxes. Only install the ones you use. You can add more later through Add-Ons without reinstalling.

Other scientific software: Mathematica, Jupyter and datasets, Mac storage for academics.

Common questions

How much space does MATLAB take on a Mac?

A few GB for MATLAB alone, and much more with toolboxes. A full install with many toolboxes can exceed 20 GB per release.

Can I delete old MATLAB versions?

Yes. Each release is a separate app in Applications. Remove old ones once your code works on the newer release.

Where are MATLAB add-ons stored on a Mac?

Mostly in ~/Library/Application Support/MathWorks, and support packages may be in ~/Documents/MATLAB.
