LINE on a Mac keeps every photo and video from every chat you are in

LINE for Mac saves chat media and keeps it with no expiry. Where the data lives, how to measure it, and how to clear it from inside the app safely.

4 min read

LINE's app is small. Its data is not, because every image, video, voice message and file sent in your chats and groups is kept on the Mac. Busy family and work groups grow it steadily.

Where it lives

LINE from the Mac App Store is sandboxed, so its data is in one container folder:

# Size of each place this app keeps data
du -sh ~/Library/Containers/jp.naver.line.mac 2>/dev/null

Folder names change between versions. If a path above shows nothing, this finds anything with the app's name in your Library:

find ~/Library/Containers ~/Library/Group\ Containers ~/Library/Application\ Support -maxdepth 1 -iname '*line*' -exec du -sh {} + 2>/dev/null

Clearing it safely

  1. Save photos and files you want to keep into a normal folder first.
  2. In LINE, open Settings and look for the chat or storage section, where it can delete cached data, images and files.
  3. Quit LINE and measure again.

Clearing media from the app removes the downloaded copies, not your chat text. Depending on how long ago media was sent, it may not be downloadable again.

What to leave alone

Do not delete the container folder unless you want LINE reset on this Mac. Chat history backups are handled on your phone, not the Mac, so a reset Mac only gets recent history back.

The same pattern in other apps: WeChat, WhatsApp, Telegram.

Common questions

Where does LINE store data on a Mac?

In ~/Library/Containers/jp.naver.line.mac for the App Store version. The folder is hidden; press Command Shift G in Finder and paste the path.

Why is LINE so big on my Mac?

It keeps every photo, video, voice message and file from your chats, with no automatic expiry. Large groups are usually most of it.

Will clearing LINE's cache delete my messages?

Clearing cached media removes downloaded photos and files, not the text of your chats. Save anything you want first.
