WeChat on a Mac keeps every photo, video and file anyone ever sent you

WeChat stores chat media on your Mac with no limit, and a phone backup can double it. Where it all lives, how to measure it, and what is safe to clear.

5 min read

The WeChat app is a few hundred MB. The folder it keeps behind it is often tens of GB, because every image, video, voice message and file from every group you are in is saved to your Mac, and nothing expires on its own. A few busy family and work groups can do this within a year.

Where WeChat keeps its data

WeChat from the Mac App Store is sandboxed, so everything lives inside one container folder in your Library:

~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat

That folder is hidden by default. In Finder, press Command Shift G and paste the path. To measure it and find the largest parts:

# Total size
du -sh ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat

# The biggest folders inside, largest last
du -h -d 8 ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat 2>/dev/null | sort -h | tail -15

The exact folder names change between WeChat versions, but the pattern is the same: a folder per account, with the media sorted into images, videos and files underneath it.

The phone backup is the one people forget

WeChat for Mac can back up the chats from your phone onto the computer, so you can move to a new phone. That backup is a full copy of your phone's WeChat data, media included, and it stays on the Mac after the move is finished. If you used this once years ago, it may still be there.

Clearing it the right way

  1. In WeChat on the Mac, open Settings and look for the storage section (under General or Storage, depending on your version). It shows how much space WeChat uses and lets you clear cached media by chat.
  2. Before clearing a busy group, save any photos or files you want to keep to a normal folder, such as Pictures or Documents.
  3. In the backup section of WeChat, delete old phone backups you no longer need.
  4. Quit WeChat and run the du command again to see what came back.

Deleting folders inside the container by hand, with WeChat closed, also works for the media folders, but the app's own tool is safer: it keeps the chat database consistent, so you do not end up with messages pointing at missing images.

Stopping it from growing back

  • Turn off automatic download of videos and files on the Mac, if your version offers it, so large media downloads only when you open it.
  • Mute and leave groups you do not read. They are usually the biggest source.
  • Check the size every few months as part of a monthly cleanup routine.

Other chat apps behave the same way. See WhatsApp, Telegram and Messages attachments.

Common questions

Where does WeChat store files on a Mac?

Inside ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat in your home folder. The folder is hidden; in Finder press Command Shift G and paste the path to open it.

Why is WeChat so big on my Mac?

It saves every image, video, voice message and file from every chat, and never removes them on its own. Busy groups and an old phone backup made through WeChat for Mac are usually the largest parts.

Will clearing WeChat storage delete my messages?

Clearing cached media from WeChat's storage settings removes the photos, videos and files, not the text of your chats. Save anything you want to keep first, because cleared media may not be downloadable again.

Can I delete the WeChat container folder?

Only if you are happy to lose your chat history on that Mac. Deleting the whole folder resets WeChat as if newly installed. Clearing media from inside the app is the safer option.
