How to uninstall Gemini CLI on a Mac, and why you should not just delete ~/.gemini

One npm command removes Gemini CLI. Its ~/.gemini folder is shared: on our Mac 871 MB of its 883 MB belonged to Antigravity, not the CLI.

How do I uninstall Gemini CLI on a Mac?

Gemini CLI is an npm package. Remove it with the same tool that installed it:

npm uninstall -g @google/gemini-cli
# or, if you used Homebrew
brew uninstall gemini-cli

which gemini should then print nothing. On our Mac it pointed at /usr/local/bin/gemini, a link into the global npm folder. If you use nvm, run the npm command with the same Node version you installed it under.

What is in ~/.gemini?

FolderSize hereWhose it is
antigravity727 MBAntigravity, Google's agent IDE
antigravity-browser-profile123 MBAntigravity's browser, with its own sign ins
antigravity-ide21 MBAntigravity
tmp9 MBGemini CLI's working files
skills, config, history2.2 MBGemini CLI settings and history

Of 883 MB, about 12 MB was the CLI's own. Antigravity keeps its data under the same .gemini folder, so deleting ~/.gemini to finish a Gemini CLI uninstall wipes Antigravity's conversations, settings and browser profile while Antigravity is still installed.

What should I delete after uninstalling?

  • Antigravity still installed: delete only ~/.gemini/tmp, ~/.gemini/history and ~/.gemini/skills, and leave the antigravity folders alone.
  • Neither tool in use: move all of ~/.gemini to the Trash. Antigravity's own uninstall is in uninstalling Antigravity.

Free Mac draws ~/.gemini with its subfolders to scale, so a 727 MB block labelled antigravity is hard to miss, and moves only what you pick to the Trash. More AI tools that do this are in AI coding tools taking up space.

Common questions

Does npm uninstall remove the .gemini folder?

No. npm removes the program only. ~/.gemini with your settings and history stays until you delete it.

Is it safe to delete ~/.gemini on a Mac?

Only if you do not use Antigravity. Google's Antigravity also keeps its data in ~/.gemini, 871 MB of it on our Mac, so check the antigravity subfolders first.

Why is my .gemini folder so big?

Usually because Antigravity stores its data there, including a full browser profile. Gemini CLI's own files were about 12 MB on our Mac.
