CleanMyMac is priced from $3.33 a month, checked on 4 September 2026, and sells a broad promise: clean, optimise and speed up your Mac. It is worth separating the parts of that which are real from the parts that are marketing, because it changes what you should look for in an alternative.
What genuinely reclaims space
These work, in any tool, including by hand:
- Clearing caches. Real, and often tens of gigabytes. Here is where they are.
- Removing leftovers from uninstalled apps. Real, and macOS never does it for you.
- Deleting large forgotten files. Real, and the only hard part is finding them.
- Clearing developer build output. Real, and usually the largest single category on a developer's machine.

The case for CleanMyMac
It is convenient, and convenience is worth money. One app, one button, and a person who does not want to think about ~/Library gets a tidier Mac without learning what a cache is. If that describes you, the subscription is doing its job.
The case against, and what we do differently
Free Mac refuses the optimisation framing entirely. It does not free RAM, remove malware, or claim to make anything faster, because none of those follow from deleting files. It shows where the space went and removes what you pick, and everything goes to the Trash.

Do Mac cleaner apps actually speed up your Mac?
Only in one situation: when the drive is nearly full, because macOS needs free space for swap and temporary files. Above roughly 15 percent free, deleting files reclaims space but changes nothing about speed. Claims about freeing RAM are best ignored, since macOS manages memory itself and unused RAM is wasted RAM.
