MacBook stops charging at 80%: why it happens and how to get to 100

Why a MacBook holds its charge at 80 percent, what Optimized Battery Charging and battery temperature have to do with it, and how to charge to full today.

Why does my MacBook stop charging at 80%?

Because Optimized Battery Charging has learned that you leave the Mac plugged in, so it holds the charge at 80 percent and finishes shortly before you usually unplug. Time spent at 100 percent wears a battery faster, which is what it avoids.

A battery that is too warm also pauses charging until it cools, whatever the percentage.

How do I charge my MacBook to 100% right now?

Click the battery icon in the menu bar and choose Charge to Full Now while it shows the hold. It applies to this charge only; the feature stays on.

Should I turn off Optimized Battery Charging?

Only if you need a full battery at unpredictable times. It is in System Settings, Battery, then the info button beside Battery Health. Leaving it on is better for the battery over years. How Optimized Battery Charging works.

Common questions

Why is my MacBook stuck at 80 percent?

Optimized Battery Charging holds the charge at 80 percent when it expects the Mac to stay plugged in, or the battery is warm. Charge to Full Now in the battery menu overrides it for that charge.

Is it bad to keep a MacBook at 80%?

No. Holding at 80 percent is the purpose of the feature: it reduces the time the battery sits full, which slows wear.
