MacBook says Battery Service Recommended: what it means and what to do

What Service Recommended means for a MacBook battery, how to check capacity and cycle count behind it, and when a replacement is worth it.

4 min read

It means macOS judges the battery to be worn or faulty enough to need attention, usually because its capacity has fallen well below new or a cell is not behaving as expected. The Mac keeps working, but runs out sooner and may slow under heavy load.

How do I check what is behind the warning?

Open System Settings, Battery, and the info button beside Battery Health for Maximum Capacity and Condition. For the cycle count, run:

system_profiler SPPowerDataType | grep -E "Cycle Count|Condition|Maximum Capacity"

Not by software. Resetting settings does not change what the battery reports. If Maximum Capacity is under 80 percent, AppleCare+ covers a replacement; what 80 percent means explains that line. With few cycles and the warning anyway, ask Apple to test it, since that points to a faulty cell.

Common questions

Is Service Recommended urgent?

Not immediately. The Mac keeps working on a worn battery, but runtime is shorter. Replace it soon if the Mac shuts down unexpectedly or the battery looks swollen.

Why does my battery say Service Recommended with a low cycle count?

Usually a weak or faulty cell. Apple can test it; under warranty or AppleCare+ a faulty battery is replaced.
