MacBook battery percentage wrong or jumping: why it happens and how to fix it

Why a MacBook battery percentage drops suddenly or jumps, what a worn battery and heavy load do to the reading, and how to let it settle.

Why does my MacBook battery percentage jump?

The percentage is calculated from voltage, current and the battery's history, not measured directly. Under a sudden heavy load voltage dips and the estimate falls; when load drops it recovers. Worn batteries show this more.

How do I make the battery percentage accurate again?

Let the Mac run down to a low charge in normal use, then charge to 100 percent without interruption (Charge to Full Now if it holds at 80). Apple no longer asks users to calibrate, but one full cycle lets the estimate settle.

Is a jumping percentage a sign of a bad battery?

Often it is a sign of a worn one. Check Maximum Capacity and cycle count: how to check battery health. Low capacity with a jumping figure means the battery is near replacement.

Common questions

Why does my MacBook battery drop suddenly?

Heavy load lowers voltage briefly, and the estimate follows it. On a worn battery the drop is larger and the Mac may shut down before reaching zero.

Do I need to calibrate my MacBook battery?

Apple no longer asks for it on current Macs. A normal discharge followed by an uninterrupted full charge lets the reading settle.
