A 128 GB Mac that is always full: a setup that keeps it working
Older MacBook Airs and Mac minis shipped with 128 GB. What fills one, the settings that matter most, and how to keep 20 GB free without constant clearing.
On a 128 GB Mac, macOS and its system files take about a fifth of the disk before you install anything. A single iPhone backup or one year of photos can fill the rest. The machine still works well, but only with a few settings on and a routine.
What fills a 128 GB Mac
| Usually | Typical size | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad backups | 10 to 60 GB each | Delete or move them |
| Photos library | 20 GB and up | iCloud with Optimize Mac Storage |
| Messages attachments | 5 to 30 GB | Keep messages for one year |
| Mail downloads | 2 to 15 GB | Mail attachments |
| Downloads folder | Varies | Sort by size and clear |
| System Data | 10 to 30 GB | System Data explained |
The settings that matter most
- Photos, Settings, iCloud, Optimize Mac Storage. Full-size originals stay in iCloud and the Mac keeps small versions.
- Messages, Settings, Keep messages: 1 Year. Old attachments go.
- System Settings, Apple ID, iCloud, Drive, Optimize Mac Storage. Files you have not opened in a while are kept only in iCloud.
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud, not the Mac. A local backup can be half the disk.
A ten-minute monthly routine
# Free space now
df -h /System/Volumes/Data
# The ten biggest things in your home
du -sh ~/* ~/Library/* 2>/dev/null | sort -h | tail -10- Empty the Trash, and Recently Deleted in Photos.
- Sort Downloads by size and delete installers you have used.
- Check for iPhone backups in Finder, your iPhone, Manage Backups.
The monthly cleanup routine is the longer version.
Before a macOS update
Major updates need 20 GB or more free to install. On a 128 GB Mac, clear space the week before, not on the day. Not enough space to install a macOS update covers it.
Common questions
Is 128 GB enough for a Mac?
It can work with iCloud Photos optimized, iPhone backups kept in iCloud, and an external drive for anything large. Without those, it fills quickly.
What takes up the most space on a 128 GB Mac?
Usually iPhone backups, the Photos library, Messages attachments and System Data. Each can be 10 GB or more.
How much free space does a 128 GB Mac need?
Keep at least 15 to 20 GB free for everyday use, and more than 20 GB before a major macOS update.
