What is the Python folder in your Mac's Library, and can you delete it?

~/Library/Python holds packages installed with pip --user, one folder per Python version. 109 MB and 3,255 files on our Mac. What breaks if you delete it.

What is ~/Library/Python?

It is Python's user site folder on macOS. Anything installed with pip install --user, or by a tool that installs that way, lands in ~/Library/Python/<version>/lib/python/site-packages, and its commands in ~/Library/Python/<version>/bin. Each Python version gets its own folder.

3,255 files in all. Folders for Python versions you no longer have are dead weight; check which versions exist with ls ~/Library/Python.

How do I see what is in it?

python3 -m pip list --user
python3 -c 'import site; print(site.getusersitepackages())'

Is it safe to delete?

Yes, in the sense that nothing in macOS needs it. Scripts that import those packages stop working until you reinstall them, and commands in its bin folder disappear. Delete the folder of a Python version you have removed without a second thought. For a version you use, prefer python3 -m pip uninstall <package> for what you no longer need.

Why does pip refuse to install without --user?

Homebrew's Python and newer system setups mark themselves externally managed, so pip refuses to install into them. Some people add --user --break-system-packages to get past it, which is how this folder fills up. A virtual environment per project, or pipx for tools, keeps things separate.
