Why is my Mac internet slow after an update?

Updates are followed by background work that uses the network: iCloud and Photos catching up, App Store updates, and system downloads. VPNs, content filters and security tools may also misbehave until their own update arrives.

What should I check?

  1. Activity Monitor, Network tab: look for a large download: which app is using the internet.
  2. Turn off VPN or filter apps briefly and test.
  3. Option click Wi-Fi and compare signal and Tx Rate with before: Wi-Fi signal strength.

What if it does not recover?

Forget the network and join again, and update any VPN or security app. If only the Mac is slow while other devices are fast, see Mac Wi-Fi slow when others are fine.

Common questions

Can a macOS update slow down Wi-Fi?

Indirectly: background downloads and sync after the update use bandwidth, and VPN or filter apps may need updates.

How do I fix slow internet on Mac after update?

Wait for background downloads, update VPN and security apps, and rejoin the Wi-Fi network.
