Mac network usage history: what macOS keeps and what it does not

What network history a Mac keeps, from per process totals to totals since startup, and how to start keeping your own log.

4 min read

Does macOS keep network usage history?

No. Per process counters reset when the process restarts, and interface counters reset at restart. Nothing is stored by day.

How can I log it myself?

Append the Wi-Fi totals with a timestamp to a file, by hand or from a scheduled job:

echo "$(date +%F) $(netstat -ib | awk '/en0/{print $7, $10; exit}')" >> ~/net-usage.txt

The two numbers are bytes received and sent since startup.

Where else can I see history?

Your router's traffic page, or the phone's cellular data screen when using a hotspot. Monthly data usage covers both.

Common questions

Can I see past internet usage on my Mac?

Not built in. Log netstat totals yourself or check your router.

How do I see total data used on Mac since startup?

netstat -ib lists bytes in and out per interface since the Mac started.
