What does 80% battery health mean on a MacBook?

It means the battery now holds 80 percent of the charge it held when new. Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80 percent of their original capacity at 1,000 full charge cycles, so 80 is the expected point of wear, not a fault.

Does Apple replace a MacBook battery below 80%?

Yes, under AppleCare+: battery service is covered when the battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity. Outside AppleCare+ the replacement is paid, unless the battery is faulty, which the standard warranty covers.

How do I check my MacBook battery health?

Open System Settings, Battery, and click the info button next to Battery Health. It shows Maximum Capacity and Condition. For the cycle count too, run:

system_profiler SPPowerDataType | grep -E "Cycle Count|Condition|Maximum Capacity"

Can I make the battery reach 80% faster?

Not usefully. Wear comes from charge cycles and heat, and forcing extra cycles or heat to cross a line early harms the battery you then keep using if the service is refused. Use the Mac normally and check the figure before the cover ends; how to check battery health shows where to read it.

Common questions

Is 80% battery health bad on a MacBook?

No. Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80 percent of their capacity at 1,000 cycles, so 80 percent is expected wear. Below it, the battery runs out sooner and AppleCare+ covers a replacement.

Will Apple replace my MacBook battery at 81%?

Not under AppleCare+'s capacity rule, which applies below 80 percent. A battery that is faulty is covered at any capacity under warranty; Apple decides that with its own diagnostics.

How many cycles does a MacBook battery last?

Apple rates current MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles to reach about 80 percent capacity. Our MacBook Air was at 82 percent after 618 cycles in October 2026.
