Signs of a swollen MacBook battery, and what to do
How to recognise a swelling MacBook battery from the trackpad, case and lid, why it happens, and why it needs service promptly.
What are the signs of a swollen MacBook battery?
A trackpad that is stiff or will not click, the bottom case bulging or rocking on a flat surface, gaps opening at the case edges, and a lid that no longer closes flat.
Why do MacBook batteries swell?
Age, heat and high charge over long periods can produce gas inside lithium cells. It is more likely on old batteries kept hot and full.
What should I do?
Stop charging, power the Mac down and book a service. Do not press on the battery or try to remove it yourself. Check whether macOS also reports Service Recommended: Battery Service Recommended.
