MacBook says Not Charging while plugged in: what it means

Why macOS shows Not Charging or Battery Is Not Charging with the adapter connected, and the checks that tell a hold from a fault.

4 min read

Why does my Mac say Not Charging when plugged in?

Often because macOS chose to pause charging: Optimized Battery Charging holding at 80 percent, or the battery being too warm. The Mac still runs from the adapter.

How do I tell a hold from a fault?

pmset -g batt
pmset -g adapter

If the adapter shows its full wattage and the Mac runs from AC Power, it is a hold. If no adapter or a very low wattage appears, try another cable, outlet and port.

What else can I try?

Restart the Mac, try the other USB-C port, and remove any hub between the charger and the Mac. A battery at Service Recommended may also charge unreliably: Battery Service Recommended.

Is Not Charging a problem on a Mac?

Usually not. macOS pauses charging to protect the battery and runs from the adapter.

How do I force my Mac to charge?

Choose Charge to Full Now in the battery menu if it is holding at 80 percent, and let a warm Mac cool.
