MagSafe light colors on a MacBook: amber, green and flashing

What the amber, green and flashing amber light on a MagSafe connector mean, and what to do when the light is off or keeps flashing.

4 min read

What does the amber MagSafe light mean?

Amber means the Mac is charging. It stays amber while the battery is below full or while it is being topped up.

What does the green MagSafe light mean?

Green means the battery is fully charged. If the battery menu shows less than 100 percent with charging on hold, macOS is pausing on purpose, usually Optimized Battery Charging at 80 percent: why a MacBook stops at 80%.

What does a flashing amber MagSafe light mean?

It signals a charging problem. Disconnect, check the connector and port for dirt or debris, reconnect, and try another outlet and cable. If it keeps flashing, the adapter, the cable or the Mac's port needs service.
