Image generation models on a Mac are 2 to 25 GB each, and apps keep their own copies
Stable Diffusion, SDXL and Flux models are huge, and each app downloads its own. Where DiffusionBee, Draw Things and ComfyUI keep them, and how to share one copy.
Local image generation on Apple silicon works well. It also needs models, and those are large. Try three apps and you may have the same model downloaded three times.
Typical model sizes
| Model family | Size per file |
|---|---|
| Stable Diffusion 1.5 | 2 to 4 GB |
| SDXL | About 6 to 7 GB |
| Flux | About 12 to 24 GB |
| LoRA add-ons | 10 to 200 MB each |

Keeping it under control
- Delete models you tried once. They can be downloaded again.
- Use one app, or point several at one folder. ComfyUI's
extra_model_paths.yamlcan read models from another folder instead of copying them. - Keep large model collections on an external SSD. Loading is slower, generating is the same.
Language models are covered in local LLM models and other AI caches in machine learning caches.

Common questions
How big are Stable Diffusion models?
Stable Diffusion 1.5 models are 2 to 4 GB, SDXL around 6 to 7 GB, and Flux around 12 to 24 GB per file.
Where does ComfyUI store models on a Mac?
In the models folder inside your ComfyUI folder. extra_model_paths.yaml can point it at models kept elsewhere.
Can I delete Stable Diffusion models I no longer use?
Yes. They are downloads and can be fetched again. Check no other app needs the same file first.
