Is 8 GB of RAM enough on a Mac?

For browsing, chat, music and office work, yes: macOS compresses memory and swaps to the SSD, and the memory pressure graph stays green. It stops being enough with virtual machines, large design files, local AI models or dozens of heavy tabs at once.

How do I know if my Mac needs more memory?

Open Activity Monitor, Memory tab. If the pressure graph is yellow or red most of the day and swap keeps growing, the Mac needs more memory or fewer heavy apps. A few gigabytes of swap with a green graph is normal.

sysctl vm.swapusage
memory_pressure | tail -1

Does 8 GB of RAM wear out the SSD?

Swap writes to the SSD, so heavy swapping every day adds wear. Normal use stays far within what the drive is rated for; keeping free space on the drive helps it spread those writes. See memory pressure and swap.

Common questions

Is 8 GB RAM enough for a MacBook Air?

For everyday apps, yes. Our 8 GB MacBook Air ran with 4.28 GB of swap and memory free at 32 percent in October 2026. Virtual machines, video editing and local AI models need 16 GB or more.

How do I check memory pressure on a Mac?

Activity Monitor, Memory tab: the graph at the bottom is memory pressure. Green is fine, yellow means macOS is compressing and swapping, red means apps are waiting for memory.
