Coursework itself is almost never the problem. A term of essays, notes and slides is a few hundred megabytes. Four things around it fill the drive, and three of them have free answers.

Free storage you probably already have
Most universities provide cloud storage with a student account, frequently a terabyte, usually OneDrive or Google Drive. It is the most underused resource in this category. The important detail is to make files online only rather than merely synced, or you have two copies rather than one, which is how placeholders work.
Software from finished modules
Statistics packages, design tools, virtual machines and language toolchains all get installed for one module and stay for three years. Removing them at the end of a term is the largest recurring win, and uninstalling properly on Windows covers the folders that stay behind.
The night before a deadline
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Settings, System, Storage, Temporary files, tick everything except Downloads.
- Delete the largest file in Downloads without deliberating.
- Set the photo folder to online only.
- If still short, turn hibernation off:
powercfg /hibernate off.
That is usually 20 GB in ten minutes. The unhurried version is the seven places Windows hides space.
Backing up coursework
A dissertation existing in one place is a bigger risk than a full drive. University cloud storage plus a copy on a USB drive before each submission costs nothing and removes the worst outcome in this whole category.
