macOS itself took 30.5 GB on this Mac, spread across four volumes
The system is split across System, Preboot, Recovery and VM volumes, so no single number shows it. Measured at 30.5 GB on macOS 26.6.2.
Ask how big macOS is and you will find numbers from 12 GB to 40 GB. They are all partly right, because macOS is not one thing on disk. It is several APFS volumes sharing one container, and each answer counts a different set of them.
| Volume | Used | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| System | 12.7 GB | macOS itself, sealed and read only |
| Preboot | 9.0 GB | Boot files, including a copy for each installed macOS and its updates |
| VM | 7.5 GB | Swap files and the sleep image. Varies with memory pressure |
| Recovery | 1.3 GB | The recovery system |
| Total | 30.5 GB |
The 47 apps in /System/Applications, from Music to Freeform, are inside the System volume and came to 693 MB. They are part of the 12.7 GB, not extra.

- System is fixed for a given macOS version. Nothing you delete makes it smaller.
- Preboot grows during an update and should shrink after. If it stays large, disk full after a macOS update covers it.
- VM grows when memory runs short and shrinks after a restart. See the sleep image and swap.
- Recovery is fixed.
Everything else, your apps, files and caches, is on the Data volume, which is where cleanup actually works. How the volumes relate is in the other volumes in your container, and why System Settings lumps things together as System Data is in Mac System Data explained.
Common questions
How much space does macOS take?
On the Mac measured, macOS 26.6.2 used 30.5 GB: 12.7 GB System, 9.0 GB Preboot, 7.5 GB VM and 1.3 GB Recovery.
Can I make macOS itself smaller?
Not the System volume, which is sealed. Swap in the VM volume shrinks after a restart, and Preboot shrinks once an update completes.
Are the built-in apps counted in macOS's size?
Yes. The apps in /System/Applications are on the System volume. On the Mac measured all 47 came to 693 MB.
Why do different sources give different sizes for macOS?
Because macOS is split across several volumes. Counting only the System volume gives about 13 GB; counting all of them gives about 30 GB.
